Abrief update of the activities of ATV/BC from July to August 2006
by MORIA JAATTEENMAKI
COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR
Since the poker ride at the end of June, I think most of everyone's activities have been getting out and enjoying this great summer weather. In exchange for the sunshine of course, for many of us there is a lot of dust to contend with. This has created, at times, extreme fire conditions in the woods but, thank goodness, there have been few major fires or interface fires. Dare I say it, but a little rain would be welcome.
Jamboree and AGM
Therewas no rain on Vancouver Island for the AGM and Jamboree, just lots of sunshine and clear blue skies. These were held on August 18 to 20th at Mt. Washington Resort on Vancouver Island. Let’s start with the AGM held on the 18th.
There were over 120 members attending this representing 19 clubs: Directors’ reports, financial statements and other reports had been circulated to all clubs in advance as well as being on posted on the web site and quads.ca. This certainly saved a lot of time. Clubs were all invited to give a short report on their activities. This is also the time when directors are elected. There were seven vacancies this year and as seven nominations had been received with no nominations coming from the floor, they were elected by acclamation.
Under New Business, the 2007 AGM and Jamboree awarded to the Summerland ATV Club. The date will be confirmed later but it will be the 2nd or 3rd weekend in August—so make a note of that on your calendar.
Following the AGM, a short directors meeting was held to elect the executive. The first new board meeting has already been held—7:30 a.m. on Sunday morning! Various jobs or assignments were reviewed, new ideas presented and items needing immediate attention were covered.
Elsewhere in QuadNews, you will find a report from president Bev Felske. In it, she has listed upcoming goals and objectives which you will see are quite ambitious but will see ATV/BC grow and serve the interests of all ATVers well.
Happy trails
Jamboree 2006was a great success. There was a total of 141 riders and passengers. Most of them were camping at the resort in a parking lot that was certainly cozy. The AGM and the banquet were held at the Alpine Lodge up the hill so most got some exercise walking to the events. Friday night was the AGM followed by a reception sponsored by Jones Brown. Saturday was another perfect day on the Island—sunny and clear.
Riders had eight rides to choose from and there was everything from easy to difficult.
Most of the rides went to the old copper mine and the leaders gave good tours of it as well as cover its history. All rides had great views of the mountains, the ocean and the islands. Most rides were back by 4p.m., giving us enough time to get ready for dinner. There was 163 at dinner—a great buffet.
Following this, the draws were held. The club did a great job getting donations for the draws and there were numerous items to draw for. Sunday morning was yet another superb day with most riders staying for another great day of riding. Then, most went home with good memories of this Jamboree and looking forward to 2007 at Summerland. Thank you Campbell River ATV Club— you did a great job and we appreciate a wonderful two days.
CATV Meeting
This is being held in St. Johns, Newfoundland, starting on September 22nd. President Bev and 1st Vice Pat will be attending for ATV/BC. An important item to be covered is the new CATV Grant program. This program will provide grants to be used to help form and expand provincial and national rider federations for ATV and/or off-road motorcycles. There are two types of grants—sustaining grant or project grant. We do know we will be applying for several grants but the details have not yet been determined by the board. A full report on the meetings will be circulated after Bev returns.
Registration and Licensing
Yes, we are still waiting for the government reply which we had originally been advised would be in July. This is a very essential item for all off-road riders, whatever you ride. ATV/BC fully supports the report which can be found at www.orvcoalitionbc.org/8428 and is recommended reading for all ORV riders.
Our web site—www.atvbc.ca—also contains several articles which cover how this progressed from day one.
That’s it for this edition. Happy trails to all.
